Help us plan!

A botanical garden is a collection of living plants and trees for display, research, education and conservation. A botanical garden offers visitors, families, students and the community a place to visit and enjoy the beauty and serenity of garden landscapes. With future pedestrian public access from many points in the city, the convenience and accessibility of the McIntire Park site will add to its success. From designed garden displays to beautiful trees, wildflower meadows and open grassy areas, the botanical garden will have something for everyone. The garden is a place to introduce children to plants and the environment in a natural setting.

Using native plant species in the design will increase the sustainability of the garden and encourage native birds and insects to return to the park. The educational component that will link park design and activities to the area schools curriculum and provide internship opportunities is just the beginning.

The McIntire Botanical Garden offers economic benefits from tourism and will help meet the city’s 2025 vision to become a green, healthy and connected community. As a nonprofit, the McIntire Botanical Garden can engage the volunteer community, offer financial sustainability and work with other groups and organizations to create a lasting public garden that will grow and enhance the City of Charlottesville for years to come.

We need your suggestions to create this garden for everyone!
